Goa is synonymous with sun-kissed beaches. The Goan coast is particularly unique owing to its proximity to the Western Ghats. A host of long shallow beaches surrounded by hillocks and semi-evergreen vegetation are found all along the western edge of the state. But Goa doesn’t end with Baga and Calangute or Colva and Palolem; there’s plenty more. Here is a list of the lesser known beaches of Goa.
North Goa
- Querim Beach: Querim is the northern-most beach in Goa and is lined with Casuarina trees. It is usually deserted and most houses in the surrounding areas are over a hundred years old. The Trincol fort is also nearby. Swimming in these waters is not advised, although staying in thatched huts around white sands makes up for it.
2. Arambol Beach: This traditional fisherman village has become a bohemian beach in the recent past. Surrounded by two cliffs on either side this beach is now a major attraction during the winter season.
3. Mandrem Beach: Mandrem is one of Goa’s best kept secrets. Away from the large crowds of Baga and Calangute this secluded beach offers Yoga, meditation and Ayurveda. So if you are spiritually inclined, make a pit stop here on your path to enlightenment.
4. Morjim Beach: You’re not going to see scores of tourists here. You will see dolphins, seagulls, and Olive Ridley turtles instead.
5. Vagator Beach: One can find a middle ground between calm beaches and rave crowds here. Surrounded by red cliffs, this beach makes for a great, if relatively quieter, party spot.
South Goa
6. Betul Beach: Located at the delta of river Sal, this beach forms a small lagoon with silvery sand surrounded by palm trees. Makes for the perfect romantic getaway.
7. Butterfly Beach: A short boat ride from Palolem will take you to Butterfly Beach. With a dense forest behind you and clear seas ahead, this place makes for a perfect picnic spot and getaway from mainland Goa.
8. Patnem Beach: This beach is smaller and less crowded: an ideal alternative to Palolem. But it isn’t so secluded that you won’t find enough entertainment. It is generously endowed with a range of shacks and stalls selling various curios.
9. Talpona Beach: Close to the Talpona River, this beach is one of Goa’s most serene. It doubles up as a birdwatchers’ paradise, with scores of migratory and sea birds resting in the area.
10. Polem Beach: Polem is the southern-most beach of Goa and possibly the most secluded. It has stretches of unspoilt white sands and rocky headlands, and is ideal for swimming, birdwatching, and dolphin spotting.
