Whether you’re driving over state borders to your grandparents for the holidays, or you and your friends want to see just how far you can chase the horizon on an open, cross-country road, a road trip offers an opportunity for adventure around every bend, but also increases the chances stressful situations – including getting lost in unfamiliar places, getting unexpectedly carsick, and backseats that smell like dirty socks.
Here are 10 tips that’ll help make your trip the best you’ve ever taken in your life:
1) An emergency car kit is a vital necessity
Do not leave home without a vehicle tool kit (screwdriver, car jack, jumper cables, motor oil, brake fluid etc), a first aid kit, cell phone chargers/a multi-port charger, a flashlight (and extra batteries), snacks, and lots of drinking water (and avoid being a horror movie cliche).
2) Make lots of mix CDs
Make sure you include songs that caters to everyone’s tastes, listen to ’em old-school style, and save your smartphone/iPod’s battery life. Or, just download this playlist, turn up the volume and enjoy the ride!
3) Take a multi-port charger
It’ll keep everyone’s devices powered up and prevent short-tempered squabbles.
4) Plug in a new car scent freshener before your trip
It’ll get rid of even the nauseating of whiffs and keep your interior smelling fresher longer.
5) Snacks are an important part of road tripping. Stay prepared
Stock up on everyone’s favourite snacks before the trip and keep them in little containers or bags to pass around and minimize spillage.
6) Store your power cords in an old sunglasses or pencil case
It’ll keep you from losing your mind, we promise.
7) A cereal container makes for a great compact car trash can
Add a trash can liner inside the container and you won’t have empty cans and wrappers all over the floor.
8) Put cling film over your cup to avoid spillage
It’s a simple and easy way to keep your car juice stain-free.
9) Take screenshots of directions while you have a Wi-Fi connection & take a map as a back-up
Chances are you’re going to be stranded somewhere with no signal. This is going to save your bacon more times than you’d think.
10) Switch your phone off & ENjoy the drive
We know, digital detox isn’t going to happen overnight, but don’t be that person who goes on a roadtrip only to always be on their phone. Use it sparingly – to check in with the folks back home or to use GPS to figure out where you are, and instead enjoy the view, and piece of mind.
Follow these tips before you climb behind the wheel, and getting to wherever you’re heading is sure to be more than just half the fun.
