Susanna was most informative, extremely helpful and very accommodating. She willingly shared her vast knowledge on Italian history. This was our first overseas holiday and so a very different experience but very enjoyable.

We had such a magical and awesome time travelling through Egypt. The organisation of the tour was exceptional. Highlights for us was definitely the felucca boat trip, swimming with the wild dolphins in The Red Sea, riding on camels through the desert with the Great pyramids of Giza in the background!! Memories and experiences that will forever stay with us! Our tour guide Medo was amazing! Best tour guide ever... he was always there for us and his knowledge and wisdom about the ancient Egyptian culture and mythology is on another level... such a passionate individual and caring about our ever need. ”read less

All 3 staff [driver, cook and guide] were great, friendly, and the food was wonderful. Tents and mattresses were of a good standard. The staff who ran the Serengeti excursion were also very professional. Some of the campsites were a little basic; with poorly maintained facilities - for example broken toilet seats and non-flushing toilets were unpleasant. But they all had a bar area for child drinks, which was good.We didn't appreciate beforehand the number of very early starts that would be required; perhaps this should be made more clear on trip notes.”read less

Thank you to Sarah for arranging this tour for us via your China agents. This is the first tailor made tour you have provided to Taiwan and was an experiment on both sides. Whilst the tour itinerary was not easy to understand and Lion Travel Service in Taipei City were unable to provide it in a more usual format for UK clients, the actual tour worked very well. We were picked up on time at the University Campus in Taoyuan and were provided with an exceptionally good tour by a very good english speaking guide. The only down side was the first hotel which was poor. We gave feedback to the company as it lets down their excellent reputation and we suggested that they don't use this hotel again. We were told by our hosts at Taoyuan University that Lion Travel is the biggest travel company in Taiwan and has a very good reputation there. We particularly enjoyed the National Centre for Traditional Arts near Yilan and the fish spa. We were unable to make use of the hot springs at the hotel as it was so dirty and the hotel was so poor. The following day the highlight was the drive to Hualien on a spectacular coast road, and the visit to Tarago Gorge Park where the gorge sides are all marble, as are the 'rocks' in the river bed below. Superb! We had a little time spare on the final day so had some time at the Royal Palace Museum in Taipei - an absolute 'must' for any visitors to Taiwan. It is fabulous and really needs several hours just to scratch the surface. 20% of China's best treasures are housed here and whilst China would like them back, Taiwan is not giving them up. The last hotel at the airport is very new and is excellent. Highly recommended company, guide, and tour. Thank you Sarah for arranging it.”read less

Itinerary

Rome

Monday. Welcome to Italy! Arrive into Rome airport where you will be met and transferred to the start hotel. Spend the remainder of the day at leisure exploring the capital. This evening at 19:00 meet the tour leader and other members of the group for a welcome meal.

Rome city tour

Step back in time this morning as we follow in the footsteps of the Romans on a guided tour of Italy's historic capital. Our first stop is the Roman Forum, the former religious, political and commercial centre of ancient Rome. Continue to the legendary Colosseum, where gladiators would battle to the death for glory. Visit the Pantheon, the best-preserved Roman building in the city. The afternoon is free for you to independently explore or visit other famous sites such as the Spanish Steps and the romantic Trevi Fountain. Perhaps make your way to the Vatican, home to the Pope and the spectacular Sistine Chapel.

San Gimignano wine tasting

Rome - San Gimignano - Florence. We leave the capital behind today and make our way north to the little town of San Gimignano, nestled in the Tuscan Hills overlooking the Chianti region. We visit a local vineyard to sample some delicious Chianti wine and explore this picturesque town, which is famous for its medieval towers. Our journey continues to Florence, Tuscany’s Renaissance capital. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure to explore this fascinating city.

Florence sightseeing

Our day begins with a walking tour through Florence’s cobbled streets to discover the extraordinary architecture, wonderful sculptures and world-class museums. Strolling through the historical centre, we'll take in highlights such as the Duomo, standing tall over the city with its striking red dome and beautiful bell tower. See the Palazzo Vecchio in Piazza della Signoria and the beautiful Ponte Vecchio with its ancient gold shops.

The afternoon is free to continue exploring Florence at leisure. Head to the famous Galleria Del Accademia, home to Michelangelo's most famous sculpture "David", visit the vast Uffizi Gallery or walk to the Piazzale Michelangelo which offers stunning panoramic views of the city. Alternatively, sit back and sip on some local wine or feast on mouth-watering Tuscan cuisine.

Leaning Tower of Pisa & Lucca

Florence - Pisa - Montecatini. This morning finds us travelling to the famous Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa to take photos of the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa. We then have some free time to enjoy lunch and walk around the city. This afternoon we continue to the charming Tuscan city of Lucca, located on the Serchio River and surrounded by its original Renaissance walls. Here we have some time to walk along the city walls or sip on a glass of Lucchesi wine in one of the lovely bars. We continue to Montecatini, home to Italy’s pristine spas famous for their curative powers, and our base for the next two nights.

Cinque Terre day tour

Today we set our sights on exploring the five captivating, pastel hued fishing villages of Cinque Terre, which cling to the rugged Italian Riviera coastline. We explore the villages of Monterosso, Riomaggiore, Vernazza, Corniglia and Manarola at leisure using our Cinque Terre pass which allows us to travel between each village on the quaint 19th century railway, as cars have been banned for over 10 years. For those looking to enjoy spectacular views, we recommend walking along one of the scenic coastal trails. This evening we enjoy dinner together at our hotel in Montecatini.

Venice walking tour

Montecatini - Venice. Bidding farewell to our tour leader this morning, transfer to Florence train station for an unescorted express train journey from Florence to Venice. Upon arrival at Venice train station make your way to the hotel which is just a two minute walk from the station.

This afternoon take in the delights of Venice on a walking tour with a local guide. Marvel at the glorious Venetian architecture, as you wander along the waterways and down the winding narrow streets of the island. Highlights include the beautiful Rialto Bridge, which spans the Grand Canal and the Bridge of Sighs, St Marks Square and a tour of the spectacular St Marks Basilica with its golden domes. Your final evening is free to independently explore and perhaps enjoy a traditional Gondola ride along the canals.
