Fez 101

After breakfast, set out to discover Fez. Stroll through its intriguing and tortuous alleys, past stairs and covered passages. It is home to one of the most beautiful medinas in the Arab world.

First up: the Fez el- Bali, the oldest part of the city. A sea of rooftops embellished with minarets and domes, it is too narrow to be accessed by cars. Aside from walking, donkeys and mules are still the best way to travel within the city’s old walls.

Then: the Talaa Kebira market. Lines of shops covered by canopies greet you here and it’s famed for its camel meat vendors. Afterwards, visit the Karaouiyine Mosque, one of the oldest in the world and the oldest still-functioning university.

Continue along the streets to see some of Fes’ most important buildings including Dar el- Magana (14th century water clock) and Fondouk el- Najjarine, a traditional inn once thronged by merchants and visitors.

After lunch, visit the Museum Dar el- Batha to view the great collection of pottery, leather-work, wood, books and manuscripts from the 19th century.

We’ll end our tour at the Fez elJedid, a fortress which functioned as Morocco’s administrative center until 1912. Explore the royal palace and the many interesting quarters nearby, including the Moulay Abdalllah Quarter, the Mellah (Jewish Quarter) and a little farther down south, the Ville Nouvelle (New quarter).

Relaxed and refreshed, we’ll spend the night in Marrakech.

Explore Marrakech + (Optional) Dinner at Chez Ali

After breakfast, we’ll explore Marrakech. Located at the crossroads of a desert, snow-capped mountains and the Atlantic plains, this city, with ancient fortified walls bordered by modern neighbourhoods, provides an ambience that is a mix of the old as well as the new. With buildings made of red sandstones and 10th century ramparts that still exist, the Old Town of Marrakech is rich in history and medieval architecture.

The places that we’ll visit here include: the Koutoubia Mosque and the Saadian Tombs which is the final resting place of the 14th century Sultans of Morocco.

We’ll also visit Jamaa el Fna, the heart of Marrakech. This market square is always bustling with acrobats, snake-charmers, storytellers and vendors selling their wares in souks. Stroll through a labyrinth of alleys with souks that burst with bright colors, music and the aroma of spices and food.

In the evening (Optional at INR 4100 per person): get ready for an enchanting dinner at Chez Ali. This experience promises to be exciting, with Berber tents set up and a large arena where dancers, acrobats and horsemen perform as you feast, with folk music and fireworks for entertainment.

Today, we’ll drive back to Casablanca for an expert-guided tour of this metropolis. We’ll start at the United Nations Square, a popular square with a range of shops, cafes and restaurants.

Built by a French architect in the 1990s, this monument gives a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean and has the world’s tallest minaret, towering at a height of 210 meters. The 60 stories high minaret is topped by a laser, which emanates light in the direction of Mecca. Take in the fresh ocean breeze as stroll along the grounds of the mosque.

In the evening: we’ll have dinner at a local restaurant. Celebrate your last night in Morocco with delicious local fare, and toast to new friendships made.
