We just returned from a unforgettable tour of Russia. We were a small group of only 11 people in Moscow and 5 people in St. Pietersburg. Our Guide had a great command of English and was very helpful. We had a great holiday.Natalia has a great personality, very knowledgeable, patient and helpful and a superb guide. We were surprised on how clean and safe Moscow and St Petersburg were compared to our own country, South Africa. I must say the continental breakfast at both hotels were not as good as it can be.I would thoroughly recommend this tour - and Natalia.read less

We had such a magical and awesome time travelling through Egypt. The organisation of the tour was exceptional. Highlights for us was definitely the felucca boat trip, swimming with the wild dolphins in The Red Sea, riding on camels through the desert with the Great pyramids of Giza in the background!! Memories and experiences that will forever stay with us! Our tour guide Medo was amazing! Best tour guide ever... he was always there for us and his knowledge and wisdom about the ancient Egyptian culture and mythology is on another level... such a passionate individual and caring about our ever need. ”read less

All 3 staff [driver, cook and guide] were great, friendly, and the food was wonderful. Tents and mattresses were of a good standard. The staff who ran the Serengeti excursion were also very professional. Some of the campsites were a little basic; with poorly maintained facilities - for example broken toilet seats and non-flushing toilets were unpleasant. But they all had a bar area for child drinks, which was good.We didn't appreciate beforehand the number of very early starts that would be required; perhaps this should be made more clear on trip notes.”read less

Thank you to Sarah for arranging this tour for us via your China agents. This is the first tailor made tour you have provided to Taiwan and was an experiment on both sides. Whilst the tour itinerary was not easy to understand and Lion Travel Service in Taipei City were unable to provide it in a more usual format for UK clients, the actual tour worked very well. We were picked up on time at the University Campus in Taoyuan and were provided with an exceptionally good tour by a very good english speaking guide. The only down side was the first hotel which was poor. We gave feedback to the company as it lets down their excellent reputation and we suggested that they don't use this hotel again. We were told by our hosts at Taoyuan University that Lion Travel is the biggest travel company in Taiwan and has a very good reputation there. We particularly enjoyed the National Centre for Traditional Arts near Yilan and the fish spa. We were unable to make use of the hot springs at the hotel as it was so dirty and the hotel was so poor. The following day the highlight was the drive to Hualien on a spectacular coast road, and the visit to Tarago Gorge Park where the gorge sides are all marble, as are the 'rocks' in the river bed below. Superb! We had a little time spare on the final day so had some time at the Royal Palace Museum in Taipei - an absolute 'must' for any visitors to Taiwan. It is fabulous and really needs several hours just to scratch the surface. 20% of China's best treasures are housed here and whilst China would like them back, Taiwan is not giving them up. The last hotel at the airport is very new and is excellent. Highly recommended company, guide, and tour. Thank you Sarah for arranging it.”read less

Itinerary

Moscow

Sunday. Welcome to Russia and the start of your holiday! You will be met at the airport in Moscow upon arrival and transferred to your hotel for check-in. Later tonight you'll be treated to dinner with the rest of your group at the hotel, followed by an informative welcome meeting. Remainder of the evening at leisure.

Red Square & The Kremlin

First thing this morning we will hop on the Moscow Metro and make our way to legendary Red Square. As the historical, political and social heart of Moscow, this famous square is home to some of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. Within the Red Square we will find the iconic domes of St Basil’s Cathedral, the imposing red brick walls of the Kremlin and the glitzy Neo-Russian facade of the GUM shopping mall. Highlights of the day include a guided tour inside the grounds of the mighty Kremlin, touring Assumption Cathedral, Ivan the Great Bell Tower and monumental Tsar Bell.

Also in Red Square, housed within a red and black marble building, is Lenin's Mausoleum. If open, we can enter the mausoleum free of charge and pay our respects to the grandfather of Communism whose embalmed body has lain in state here since his death. The rest of the day is free for you to further explore the area. Cultured out? Moscow’s restaurants and clubs are open until very late!

During our stay in Moscow there will be the chance to join one of our optional evening excursions, such as a night at the famous Moscow Circus (Oct - May), a traditional Cossack Show or a Moscow by Night coach tour.

Inside a Soviet Bunker

Today offers free time for you to further explore this exciting city, or you can opt to head down into a Soviet Bunker, by purchasing our Inside a Soviet Bunker add-on. Heading 65 metres below ground you'll have the opportunity to tour this Underground Cold War Museum - a Stalinist-era Soviet Bunker that up until recently was a top secret symbol of Soviet Power. Hidden beneath an ordinary apartment building in the heart of Moscow, 18 floors below ground level, this mighty 75,000-square-foot facility was constructed covertly in the 1950s, to protect the select few against a US nuclear attack. The site was in operation throughout the 1970s. In the 1990s with the death of communism, this bunker came off the top secret list and is now open to the public. The rest of the day is free to explore.

St Pete's City tour & Church on Spilled Blood

Moscow-St Petersburg. This morning we take a high speed train to St Petersburg. Upon arrival we embark on a city sightseeing tour by vehicle which will travel along Nevsky Prospekt, past the museum and university district and Admiralty End, with stops to view the exterior of magnificent St Isaac's Cathedral and The Bronze Horse. After lunch we tour the exquisite Church On Spilled Blood, Peter and Paul Fortress and the beautiful SS Peter and Paul Cathedral which houses the tombs of the Romanov monarchs.

Fountains of Peterhof or Catherine Palace

This morning we head out of the city to explore the beautiful Peterhof Palace located on the Gulf of Finland in the summer or visit Catherine Palace at Tsarskoe Selo in winter (or Pavlosk Palace if Catherine Palace is closed).

Often referred to as Russia’s ‘Versailles’, the gardens of Peterhof Palace are a wonderland of greenery and flowers, sweeping vistas and ornate architectural decorations. The real highlight are the spectacular gold fountains. At Catherine Palace it's the exterior and the interiors of this lavishly decorated building that really catch the eye - and the lavish Amber room is a real highlight! This evening offers free time.

Hermitage Tour & Soviet era Communal Apartment tour

Today’s sightseeing includes a guided tour of the treasure-filled Hermitage at the Winter Palace which houses one of the biggest and best art collections on earth.

Later, we visit a Soviet era Communal Apartment - a fascinating exhibition of a former communal apartment retained in its original layout with four rooms, a narrow corridor and common kitchen. To help ease the burden of Russia's housing problem in the 1920s they transformed city apartments owned by one person into these communal dwellings with factory workers, military personnel and members of Soviet institutions moving in.
