Absolutely first class tour. The guide, itinerary, transport arrangements excellent. Katherine the guide is an absolute GEM. So knowledgeable and helpful, really helped to make the tour a wonderful experience. Thanks to Sarah Bansgrove, who made booking the holiday so simple and easy. Be prepared to budget for food which like everything in Iceland is expensive. However Iceland is a unique country. It has so much to offer and is so diverse it's unbelievable. One of the best holidays i've ever had. We will be going back.read less

We have been so impressed with our GJ Travel trip and feel our guide Snorri really made it an unforgettable experience. He showed us all the great spots and added extra stops where sometimes we were the only ones there. He was so knowledgeable about Iceland and its natural and country history. We felt that the tour was personalised to our interests. The accommodation and food was good. We would give the trip 10 stars if we could. We would highly recommend travelling with GJ travel. Snorri ensured we had no worries or concerns for the whole trip, what a great guide!read less

My husband and I had a fantastic time on our recent trip to Iceland with GJ travel. The trip was well organized and offered us the opportunity to see many destinations during our short stay. Our guide, Baldur, was extremely knowledgeable and loved Iceland. He made the whole trip interesting and fun. He even provided small treats along the way (my favorites were the Icelandic chocolates and a floating paper lantern to release at on NYE) Our driver, Arte, got us to each destination quickly and safely despite some rough winds and road conditions. The bus was clean and comfortable. Though you spend much of the day on the bus, the stops are frequent enough that we only spent about an hour or less on the bus between stops. read less

For it being my first time to Iceland, and my mom's second time. I loved the whole tour. I have special-needs, and Rocky Rock, our tour guide made sure I was always OK on the glacier, and waterfall hikes. He would hang onto me to make sure I didn't fall as I do have difficulty walking. Jon our bus driver did an awesome job with getting everyone from one place to another. I can imagine how tiring it must've been, for him to have to drive the many miles he had to drive from Reykjavik, and back. But, he dud it all with a great attitude. Meeting everyone else on the tour was an unforgettable moment too. Looking forward to coming back someday, and doing another tour with you guys. We just came off the "Best of Iceland" tour yesterday that we did with you guys, for six days.read less

We have had an awesome 3 days travelling around the south of the island, and our guide Martina was excellent and very knowledgeable. We got to see the aurora borealis last night which was fantastic. Packed so much into 3 days but never felt rushed.

Itinerary

Welcome to Iceland

Individual transfer by Flybus shuttle bus from Keflavik airport to your accommodation in Reykjavik.

Volcano Crater, Seals, Fjords & Mountains

At 09:00 meet our tour guide and depart from Icelandair Hotel Natura. Travel west along the scenic Hvalfjörður fjord and the town of Borgarnes. Easy hike on Grábrók volcano crater in the middle of a greenish lava field. In the afternoon visit a natural history & seal museum in the fishing village of Hvammstangi. Further north stop at the turf church of Víðimýri and then continue along scenic fjord landscape and over several mountain passes until we reach Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland. The overnight location at Akureyri allows you to walk around the town.

The Capital of North Iceland, Lake Mývatn & Geothermal baths

In the morning explore the town of Akureyri, also called the capital of North Iceland: visit the botanical garden, walk the streets and admire the panoramic view over the Eyjafjörður fjord. In the afternoon travel to Goðafoss – the waterfalls of the Gods. Then explore Lake Mývatn, known as a geological wonderland and for its abundant birdlife. See the strange lava formations at Kálfaströnd, the pseudo craters at Skútustaðir and the tephra cone Hverfjall. End the afternoon relaxing in the geothermal Mývatn Nature Baths with a fantastic view over the whole area.

There is a possibility of seeing the Northern Lights during the evening from mid-September to mid-April.

Lava Labyrinth, Hot Springs & Travel East

In the morning walk in the lava labyrinth at Dimmuborgir “the dark castles”, hoping to get a glimpse of the trolls who are said to live there. In the afternoon, visit the hot spring area of Námaskarð with bubbling mud pools and steaming solfataras. Head through the uninhabited highlands and moon-like surrounding to East Iceland. From June to August the tour includes a detour to the powerful waterfall Dettifoss.

East Fjords

It’s a day to admire the dramatic fjord landscape and its tiny fishing villages at the end of twisty roads in the East Fjords and on route visit an interesting stone and mineral collection. In the afternoon see Vatnajökull – Europe’s biggest glacier that is visible all over Southeast Iceland.

There is a possibility of seeing the Northern Lights during the evening from mid-September to mid-April.

Vatnajökull National Park, Glacier Lagoon, Diamond Beach & South Coast

Start the day with a stop at Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon filled with floating icebergs, and explore the extraordinary site where you might see seals swimming in arctic waters. Depending on the season optional boat trips are available. You can walk on the so-called Diamond Beach, where large icebergs get stranded. Travel along the southern part of the glacier Vatnajökull and spend time at Europe’s largest national park, which has Iceland’s highest mountains, an alpine environment, and Europe’s largest glacier.
In the afternoon, a beautiful drive with many natural wonders awaits us as we head across the Eldhraun lava field, cross the sandy desert of the south coast, overlooked by mountainous cliffs, glaciers and waterfalls. Stroll along the black lava beach of Reynisfjara near Vík. In the small village of Skógar there is Skógafoss waterfall which is 60 meters high and is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country. Continue to the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall which plunges over the mountain. There is an interesting trail that goes behind the fall – if you are prepared to get wet! Further west stop at the Lava Centre and learn about Iceland’s volcanic activity.

Icelandic Horses & Golden Circle

Explore classics today as we travel the route of the Golden Circle sights. Start the day at Friðheimar, where you learn about the Icelandic horse, its special qualities and history and visit a geothermal greenhouse. Later on, see steam from the Geysir geothermal fields as we arrive. There is a variety of hot springs and bubbling pools. The original geyser is now dormant but has been replaced by Strokkur “the Churn” which erupts at 5-10 minute intervals. Continue to Gullfoss, “the golden falls“, which is a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters into the Hvítá river and attracts travellers in summer and winter. Travel inland to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As we return to Reykjavík, we take you for a short city tour to show highlights of the world’s northernmost capital.

Northern Lights: From mid-September to mid-April optional Northern Lights evening tours can be booked at the lobby of your hotel, should weather conditions be favourable.
