Jerusalem: 3 religions in 3 minutes

Jerusalem is the spiritual cradle of three of the world’s major religions – Islam, Judaism and Christianity.

Henry Arvidsson's fascinating video shows how it's only a short walk between
the Western Wall, the Dome of the Rock (Temple Mount) and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Our local representative will be waiting at Ben Gurion Airport to welcome and assist you. Then, you will be chauffeured to your hotel.

On the way, we’ll pass by the Caesarea Aqueduct, which was built by Herod the Great and later modified by the Romans.

Upon arrival, check-in and put your feet up for a little while to rest. The entire group will meet later in the evening to head out for a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.
After breakfast, we will head out to visit the Sea of Galilee and Nazareth.

You’ll never forget your first view of the Sea of Galilee, known locally as Lake Kinneret; this beautiful lake lies among the hills, its deep blue waters lined with groves of figs, olives, dates and pomegranates.

Here, we’ll take a boat ride on the waters, similar to the fishing vessels of Jesus’s time. In the midst of the lake, the gentle waves lapping the boat, it’s easy to imagine the wonder the disciples felt upon seeing him walk to them across the water, calming the storm.

Afterwards, we’ll visit the nearby Mount of Beatitudes where Jesus delivered the powerful Sermon on the Mount to a multitude, and onwards to Tabgha (where thousands were miraculously fed with a few loaves of bread and fish) and Capernaum (which served as the base of his ministry).

Our last stop for the day is Nazareth, where Jesus grew up and the angel told Mary she would bear the child of God. Today, the air is filled with the tolling of bells and calls to prayer while the smells of spices and fresh coffee linger everywhere.
It’s another beautiful day in Israel.

Today, we’ll venture south, towards the Mount of Temptation, where Jesus was tempted by the devil. Halfway up the mountain sits the remarkable Greek Orthodox monastery of Qarantal, and on the summit which we will visit, a small chapel that offers moments of quiet contemplation and incredible views across the hills.

From the mountains down to the river Jordan, we’ll go. We’ll spend some time by the waters of the river, where John baptized Jesus. As you walk by the quiet waters, let your mind wander to the day God opened the skies and sent the Holy Spirit in the form of a small white dove to anoint his son. (If you would like to renew your baptismal vows in the waters of the river, please let us know.)

By the evening, we’ll arrive in Bethlehem, have dinner and enjoy a good night’s rest.
We’ll spend the day exploring the little town of Bethlehem. Walking through the actual town of Christ’s birth is an incredible feeling.

One of our most important stops will be the Church of Nativity. As you walk in, you can easily envisage the scenes of Mary and Joseph, and the three kings. A few steps above the altar is a silver star which marks the place where Jesus was born. It is truly a powerful and humbling experience for all who see it.

In the afternoon, we will visit the picturesque village Ein Karem, where according to tradition, John the Baptist was born, as well as two churches in the village.
From Bethlehem we will drive to Bethany, the home of the Lazarus, Mary and Martha. Here, we will visit the Tomb Of Lazarus.

Then, we will travel down the Jordan valley via Qumran (the Dead Sea Scrolls found here by a Bedouins shepherd chasing a runaway goat, have greatly contributed to our understanding of Judaism and early Christianity) on our way to Masada National Park. The ancient fortress here, once King Herod’s palace, is one of the world’s most beautiful ruins and offers a spectacular view of the Judaean wilderness.

Then, onwards to the Dead Sea, where you’ll be able to enjoy a refreshing dip, floating and swimming in the buoyant waters. Afterwards, we will visit an Avaha factory. At this world-famous cosmetics company’s factory, you will learn why the unique mineral make-up of the Dead Sea mud helps to cleanse and invigorate the skin, and heal the body. You'll be able to purchase gifts to bring back for family and friends.

We’ll top off the day with dinner at Jerusalem and check-in at our hotel for the night.

Our first stop after breakfast is the Mount of Olives, named for the olive groves that once covered its slopes. As you know, this is one of the most sacred sites for Christians and Jews alike.

We will see the Kidron Valley, over which lie more than 150,000 Jewish graves. According to their faith, the Messiah will arrive from the Golden Gate (which lies opposite the mountain), thus anyone buried there will be the first ones to greet him.

We will also visit other holy sites including the Pater Noster Shrine, the Dominus Flevit Church, the Church of All Nations (where Christian tradition says that Mary was buried), as well as the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus was arrested (its gnarled olive trees are over 1,000 years old).

Also on our route: the Western Wall (the last remnants of the Temple in Jerusalem and the most sacred place in Judaism) as well as the Upper Room on Mt Zion. In this holy and humble space, Jesus shared the Last Supper with the apostles, and here too is where, after his resurrection, he appeared in their midst.

In the evening, a festive celebration awaits!
This morning, we will walk with pilgrims along the Via Dolorosa (Stations of the Cross) all the way to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, site of Jesus’s crucifixion, the holiest place in all of Christendom.

Then, we will visit the Church of St. Anne, the Pool of Bethesda and the Holocaust Museum, a memorial to those who perished in the Holocaust.

On our way back, you’ll be able to indulge in a little retail therapy, as we’ll be walking through a marketplace. Recommended: jars of olive oil, religious tokens and silver jewellery.

It’s our last evening in Israel. We’ll share our experiences from the journey with each other at our farewell dinner at a local restaurant in Jerusalem.
Today, we’ll be driven to the airport to catch our flights home. Have a safe journey!
